Whatever Happened to Hood Ornaments?

Remember when car hoods had fun, sleek or sophisticated figurines? Today, you’ll hardly ever see one. But what happened to the hood ornaments we knew and loved in the past? It turns out, there’s a surprising history behind hood ornaments - and why they disappeared.

Ornaments have long adorned our modes of transport, from lady luck strapped to the bow of a ship to the ornate spires worn by carriage horses. Car historians trace the hood ornament back to the early 20th century, when cars still had external radiator caps and temperature gauges. Seeking ways to dress them up, designers turned to miniature works of art—animals, emblems and model machines that embodied the car's identity. In the 1920s, the Cadillac LaSalle featured an elaborate statuette of its namesake, intrepid 17th century French explorer Robert de LaSalle, tipping his hat over a burned-out campfire.

By the end of the decade, the practical need for the hood ornament was gone, as radiator caps were relocated under hoods and temperature gauges moved to dashboards. But that didn't stop the auto mascot from enjoying a life of its own. Some sort of doppelganger topped most cars made in America between 1930 and 1950. Among the classics: the forward-leaning Roman messenger goddess Mercury used on Buicks in the 1930s; the wild and sinewy Archer on vintage Pierce Arrows; and the Goddess of Speed that once graced Packards.

Stripped-down hippie tastes, Nader-esque concerns that ornaments could turn otherwise minor pedestrian scraps into fatal accidents, and even irrational fears about heightened fuel costs from increased drag, began to erode the popularity of hood ornaments over the years.

How All-Wheel and 4-Wheel Drive Works

Different cars use different systems that enable drivers to have more control over the vehicle. However, many drivers don’t know the difference between four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. This distinction is critical if you’re trying to figure out how your car works. Here’s more information from How Stuff Works:

There are almost as many different types of four-wheel-drive systems as there are four-wheel-drive vehicles. It seems that every manufacturer has several different schemes for providing power to all of the wheels. The language used by the different carmakers can sometimes be a little confusing, so before we get started explaining how they work, let's clear up some terminology:

  • Four-wheel drive - Usually, when carmakers say that a car has four-wheel drive, they are referring to a part-time system. For reasons we'll explore later in this article, these systems are meant only for use in low-traction conditions, such as off-road or on snow or ice.
  • All-wheel drive - These systems are sometimes called full-time four-wheel drive. All-wheel-drive systems are designed to function on all types of surfaces, both on- and off-road, and most of them cannot be switched off.
Part-time and full-time four-wheel-drive systems can be evaluated using the same criteria. The best system will send exactly the right amount of torque to each wheel, which is the maximum torque that won't cause that tire to slip.

Can't stop texting and driving? These apps can help

Texting and driving is against the law in 39 states but that hasn’t stopped many of us from reaching for the phone while we’re on the road. About 100,000 people are texting and driving at any given moment, according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. And more than 1 million accidents this year have been caused by distracted drivers, many of them while texting.
Still, the chime of a new text message is enticing and the urge to look at it is almost Pavlovian. The good news is that if you can’t keep yourself from reading and sending text messages while driving, smartphone apps can help you break the dangerous habit. One of the most appealing of these apps is DriveMode, a free download from AT&T, which limits the phone’s functionality while you’re driving. When DriveMode is activated, it will automatically silence the notification sounds of incoming texts, emails and even your phone calls. It’ll also send an automatic reply to the sender or caller that you’re driving and can’t respond. You still can receive and make calls for as many as five people if you absolutely need to hear from them. But no texts are allowed. (How many of us reach to respond to a text while driving just so a friend or family member doesn’t think we’re being rude?) Unfortunately the app is available only for AT&T subscribers and only for Android and BlackBerry smartphones. A spokeswoman said the company is working on an iPhone app, but no release date is scheduled.
Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile make similar apps, although they are not all free. If you feel it is essential to get and respond to text messages while driving, consider using a service that will read your text messages to you and allow you to respond by talking. If you have the iPhone 5 or 4S, you can get Siri to help you out. When you get a new text message you can simply ask Siri to read it to you. After she’s read it, you can tell her you’d like to respond and she’ll take down your message and send it. Google Voice Actions provides a similar service for Android users. If you have an iPhone 4 or 3, or a BlackBerry, you can download the DriveSafe.ly app, which provides a similar service. There are also apps to help parents of teen drivers, who are more likely to text and drive than any other age group. A recent survey by NHTSA found that drivers ages 18 to 20 are three times more likely to text and drive than those 25 and older. And a survey sponsored by AT&T found that 43% of teenagers said they have texted while driving. If you are the parent of a teenage driver, consider downloading the DriveScribe app, available in Google Play and Apple’s App Store, to your child’s smartphone. The free app uses a jamming function to block all texts and calls when it is switched to “driver mode.” It also keeps drivers apprised of speed limits and upcoming stop signs, and will even tell a driver to slow down if the car is moving too fast. Paranoid parents can even get text or email alerts when the app detects the vehicle is going faster than the speed limit. As an incentive for teens to activate the app — rather than being told by their parents — the app developer created a scoring system in which drivers are awarded points and gift cards for safe driving. An app called OneProtect provides even more control for parents. Once the app is installed on a teen's phone the parent can turn the app on remotely, making it impossible for a teen to turn the app off without the parents finding out. But keep in mind that it’s not just kids who are texting and driving — the AT&T survey found that 41% of teens say they’ve seen their parents text and drive too. So, look into these apps and decide which is right for you. And in the meantime, throw your phone in the glove compartment while you’re in the car and lock it if you need to. The first step to breaking the texting-while-driving addiction starts with you. Read more: http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn--texting-driving-apps-20121107,0,4709394.story

The country's most popular newspaper reviews one of our most iconic sports utility vehicles: bit.ly/TY5x5A
"A V6 engine comes standard across the Wrangler lineup, and whether you’re tackling rush hour or the Rubicon trail, test drivers say the Wrangler offers plenty of power for the task at hand. The two-door Wrangler gets an EPA-estimated 17/21 mpg city/highway, which is low in comparison with most compact SUVs. However, the Wrangler’s fuel economy is a close match for trail-ready rivals like the Toyota FJ Cruiser. While the 2013 Wrangler’s suspension system excels off pavement, reviewers note that its rugged, purpose-built design means that you shouldn’t expect a car-like ride. However, if you’re willing to sacrifice a car-like ride, critics generally maintain that the Wrangler is still fun to drive, despite its trucky ride." Courtesy of USAToday.com

Festival Review

The Boogie, Blues and Brews Festival was amazing this weekend!  Vendors of all kinds showcased their goods and services & pulled in an awesome crowd!

For the food they of course had the normal Turkey Legs, Funnel Cake, nachos and burgers but they also had an outstanding Chili Cook Off, a Sweet Tea Competition, and some of the best salsa I have ever had!

There was a wide array of homemade jewelry, specialty clothing, hats and purses as well as photographers, authors and artistes of all kinds!

The best part of course was the boogieing!  The line-up was spectacular with many different styles and sounds!  Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man kicked everything off with their Swamp Rock, Tex- Mex style and the weekend rocked all the way through to the big finale of the Los Lonely Boys performance that shook the ground with their self-coined Rockpango spirit and sound!

It was definitely a weekend to remember.  We are proud to say we were able to go out and help support our local community organizations and that we had a great time while doing it!  See you next year Boogie, Blues and Brews!

New Cars That Are Worth Waiting For

JANUARY 2012: 2013 Ford Focus ST

The new Focus is at last debuting in the U.S., with a 2.0-liter, direct-injected, 160-hp motor and variable valve timing, as well as a five-speed manual. But, the car to wait for is the 2013 Focus ST, which debuts in early 2012. It gets a six-speed manual with the same EcoBoost (turbocharged) 2.0-liter as the much larger Edge and Explorer and will be good for somewhere in the neighborhood of 250 hp, which puts it in league with hot hatches like the MazdaSpeed3 and beyond the output of the VW GTI. Ford is also promising a tauter suspension and meatier tires as well as bigger brakes to go with all that horsepower. Expect to pay at least $25,000.

FEBRUARY 2012: 2013 Mitsubishi Evo XI

MARCH 2012: 2013 Toyota Prius C

At this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Toyota debuted an entire line of Prius models, including the intriguing Prius C Concept. They still stress that this is a concept, but a small, sporty hybrid hatchback is surely on its way. We can merely hope Toyota is smart enough to retain these design cues, especially as this is meant to be a "fun to drive" hybrid with taut handling and a sub-$20K price. Toyota is promising the highest mileage of any hybrid on the road that isn't a plug-in.
 EARLY 2012: Volkswagen Golf R

APRIL 2012: 2013 Chevy Camaro ZL1

The best reason to herald the arrival of this ZL1 isn’t the Cadillac CTS-V-derived supercharged V-8 with 580 hp (up from 556 hp in the Caddy), nor is it the top speed of around 180 mph. It’s that Chevy engineers finally listened to those of us who howled about how great the Camaro could be.

Not only does the new ZL1 get a ridiculous amount of muscle good for 0 to 60 runs in the low 4-second range, but it also benefits from revised front and rear dampers as well as antiroll bars. Finally, then, the $54,995 Camaro ZL1 is starting to fulfill its potential to offer supercar driving at a price that more than the 1 percent can afford. Even better: These same revisions will trickle down to the more affordable $31,930 Camaro SS.

APRIL 2012: 2013 Mini Paceman

JULY 2012: 2013 Dodge Dart

JULY 2012: 2013 Cadillac ATS

To say that Cadillac is chasing the BMW 3 series with this car would be an immense understatement. The ATS’s footprint is such a spot-on copy of the BMW that the Caddy could proverbially step right into the BMW’s shoes. Even the EPA interior space is close, which is no accident at all. With the all-new ATS, Cadillac didn’t want to fit somewhere between Bimmer’s 3 and 5 series, which is what happened to the CTS, as well as Infiniti G sedans and more than one Acura. Nor did Caddy want to make the great mistake Lexus did with its IS—copying the BMW look, but falling down on the job of making a real driver’s car.

Nope, Cadillac says it wanted to beat the BMW 3 series in every part of the game. The ATS is a lighter car, at 3400 pounds, with more engine options that pack more punch. The Caddy’s 2.0-liter four delivers 270 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, topping the 240 hp and 260 lb-ft you’d get from the new 2.0-liter four in the 2012 328i. The ATS also offers a V-6 good for 320 hp, besting the BMW 335i by 20 hp. (Note, however, that the 335i can put down 300 lb-ft to just 267 for the V-6 Cadillac.)

Given what Cadillac has achieved with the CTS, which is a heavy platform, it’s going to be exciting to see what the carmaker can do with its sights set squarely on the lighter and nimbler 3 series. MSRP is still a ways off, but figure the ATS will have very similar pricing to the 3 series, perhaps minus the expensive markups.

Best Car Jokes

Near the end of their racing careers, a Ford and a Chevrolet made a pact. The first one to reach racing heaven would let the other know if heaven even had car racing.

As luck would have it, the Chevrolet was demolished in a fiery wreck. A few days later, it revealed itself to the Ford in a vision. "I have some good news and some bad news," the Chevy told the Ford. "The good news is that heaven is crazy about auto racing. They have everything here--NASCAR, Indy cars, Formula 1, you name it."

2000 10Best Car Jokes"So what's the bad news?" the Ford asked the deceased Chevrolet.

"The bad news is that you've won the pole position for next Saturday's race."

2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Makes 580 Horsepower

MILFORD, MICHIGAN – Chevrolet is staging one of those long, bit-by-bit rollouts of its new King of the Hill Camaro ZL1, and the latest tidbits are power and torque ratings. The 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 will make 580 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 556 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm. That trumps Ford’s Shelby GT500, rated 550 horsepower and 510 foot-pound of torque.
Other Mustangs enjoy serious weight advantages over their Camaro counterparts, though 30 horses and 46 foot-pound could make the ZL1’s likely extra weight easy to overcome. Chevy hasn’t released weight figures yet. First drives are planned for late this year. The ZL1 goes on sale in early 2012 as a ’12 model.
The new muscle car also will benefit from Chevrolet’s newfound interest in chassis refinement, its desire to make the car turn fast as well as go straight fast. GM’s latest version of Magnetic Ride Control, with 1,000 damping adjustments every second, also found in the Corvette ZR1 and Cadillac CTS-v, is standard. It features twin wire/dual coil dampers at each corner. Performance Traction Management (PTM) -- designed for both the race course and the drag strip -- also comes standard.
PTM HAS FIVE SETTINGS:
Mode 1 – Traction control for wet conditions, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Tour.
Mode 2 – Traction control on Sport 1, with stability control on, Magnetic Ride Control on Tour.
Mode 3 – Traction Control on Sport 1, stability control on, Magnetic Ride Control on Sport.
Mode 4 – Traction Control on Sport 2, stability control off, Magnetic Control on Sport.
Mode 5 – Traction control on Race, stability control off, Magnetic Ride Control on Track. Launch control for drag strips (six-speed manual, only).
2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Front View In Motion photo

Chevrolet isn’t talking pricing yet, either, though it’s likely to be competitive with the Shelby GT500, while coming standard with track-ready components that are optional in the Ford, or available through its racing catalogue. The ZL1 will come with an engine oil cooler off the C6 ZR1, a rear differential cooler and a high-performance fuel system. Chevy says about one third of the ZL1’s components are upgraded from the Camaro SS, or are exclusive.
The engine is not. It’s a specially tuned version of the 6.2-liter supercharged LSA small block V-8 also used in the CTS-v. Here, the extra 24 horses come from its unique induction system with a lower-restriction air filter, dual inlet paths and improved supercharger housing airflow. The supercharger intercooler is of a higher efficiency. Transmission options are a six-speed automatic with manumatic control and a Tremec six-speed manual. The ZL1 also becomes the first Camaro to get electric power assisted steering.
Don’t panic. Chevy says the EPAS is a belt-driven system from TRW that will have the feel, feedback and precision you’d expect from such a car. Eliminating this particular parasitic loss can help save power as well as efficiency.
The ZL1 isn’t ready for EPA fuel economy testing yet, and Chevy won’t commit to whether or not its new musclecar will escape the gas-guzzler tax. There’s still more to learn about the ZL1 (and you can be sure we'll be bringing it all to you), but what we do know for sure is even in the new decade, the Chevy vs. Ford rivalry won't be relegated to Volt vs. C-Max Energi. With the Camaro ZL1 nearly ready to take on the Shelby GT500, the horsepower race is still on.

26 isn't the speed limit...?

There was this car that was driving very slowly down the highway. A State Trooper pulls it over. "What have I done wrong, officer?" the driver asks.
"You are going 26mph on a major highway. There is a law against that," the officer says to the driver. "You must go at least 50mph."
"But when I turned on the highway, the sign said 26!" the driver replies.
"HA HA HA!" The officer laughs out loud. "That is because this is Interstate 26! The 26 isn't the speed limit!"
The driver leans back in her car seat and the cop sees another woman sitting beside her. She looked as pale as a ghost.
"What happened to her?" the officer asks.
"I don't know, but she has been that way ever since we got off of interstate 160."
